Why Dual Extraction?

Mushrooms contain different naturally occurring compounds that respond differently to extraction methods.

A dual-extraction process uses both water and alcohol extraction. The purpose is to obtain a broader spectrum of extractable mushroom compounds than relying on only one extraction method. Water-soluble and alcohol-soluble compounds can be addressed through separate stages before the extracts are brought together into the finished ingredient. Many extracts are using only one extraction method.

The word “extract” on a mushroom product does not always tell you whether the material was produced through a single extraction or a dual extraction. We’ve seen plenty of Lion's Mane coffee where we have trouble from the label seeing whether it is a dual extract or not. We identify ours as a Dual Extract so customers know the process that the extract has gone through and what extract they are getting.

Not all Lion’s Mane products are processed the same way.

Lion's Mane powder, if not specified- is often non-extracted, and that is generally produced by drying mushroom material and grinding it into a powder. An extract undergoes additional processing intended to pull soluble compounds from the mushroom material and concentrate them.
